Hen's Nest Reports! / 21 January 2023 “The Catch Pens!”
« Last post by HEN on January 21, 2023, 07:12:00 AM »
I just learned that the day after they stocked from the Spring River hatchery, they also dumped fish from the Ouachita catch pens. That’s why there are so many small fish in the river. The catch pen fish don’t get the growing time of the hatchery fish so they are always small, I think about 5 to 11 inches. That puts a few thousand more fish in the river but it also makes it harder to catch the larger fish because the little buggers jump on everything that hits the water!!

The generation has been sporadic!!  They haven’t stuck to the schedule very well. They did generate Friday as posted, but not the day before. Will see what the weekend brings. Water clarity has improved significantly over the entire river and water temperatures are doing great at around 45 degrees.

The Lower Little Mo' / Fishing Tuesday !/17/23
« Last post by Johndavis on January 18, 2023, 08:10:20 AM »
I started the day at Riverside as the water was falling out post generation. I caught fish there, but best of all a first for me. I caught a small pike?? about 100 ft below the stocking ramp. I moved to Hinds Bluff about 1:15 and as Hen reported the stocking truck showed up at about 2. After about 30 minutes it was game on. I fished down at the bottom of Hinds Bluff until the generation came in. It probably didin't matter what fly you used, but I used a Chartruese JD Special until I had to cut it off, then shredded a Long Creek, and back to the JD Special.  I did talk to a lady who was fly fishing as well and she said there were plenty of fish(pre stocking), which is good. I was surprised to see few people out, as I ended up the only fly fisherman as the lady I spoke to was leaving as I arrived.

Another great day of fishing, sore wrist, but...I hit a deer about 1 mile from the house last night. Now starts the insurance, car repair process. Luckily it was running low and the damage is to the bumper and trim, all below the front license plate bracket, I think...John D

Hen's Nest Reports! / 17 January 2023 “they stocked again!”

The water was still flowing really good today at about 2:00 when the stocking truck from the spring river hatchery backed down the ramp at Old Factory Site. I was surprised to see it because I had been told by my source that they would stock tomorrow, the 18th of January. Junior, the driver, said Melissa let him bring the load today so he could attend his daughters basketball game tomorrow. Good for her and good for us, got our fish early!! 🤗🤗.  That puts approximately 3500 more fish in the lower Little Missouri River. The river was still running from the mornings generation when they stocked and they cranked up again as scheduled at 3:00.  We should have morning and evening generation all week, thus scattering the new fish all over the river. Will try to get an idea of the quality of the fish we received sometime tomorrow if it doesn’t rain. I don’t do rain days😎😎. Will let you know what I find. What I saw looked good!!

Water temperature is staying about 46 degrees over the entire river and the water clarity has improved a lot. It’s still a little green but not brown like it was a week ago because of the lake turning over. Good chances to fish falling water all week, which is always fun.

Sampled the fish yesterday, January 18th, at all 5 stocking sites. Most seemed to be on the smaller size, 9 to 12 inch fish, with a few 13 to 14 inches thrown in here and there. All healthy and lots of them. Still seem to be hanging out right at the stocking sites even with the generation. A quick note, they didn’t generate yesterday evening as scheduled, and it’s 7:30 on Thursday morning and they didn’t start at 6:00 this morning as scheduled???  Once again remember when you are exploring up and down the river, you can’t trust the Corp!!  Be vigilant, they can start generating at any time and trap you on the wrong side of the river. 😬😬😬.

Hen's Nest Reports! / 11 January 2023 “sampled the fish”

Sampled the fish yesterday at all the stocking points.  Caught a couple of limits at all 5 locations. Lots of 12 inch stockers, but a few nicer fish mixed in with them. The ones that stayed at the head of the food chain are always bigger. They still haven’t generated so the fish haven’t been scattered. It’s 8:45 Wednesday morning and they haven’t started todays scheduled generation. 🤔🤔🤔.

Here’s the pic Mike sent for me to tack onto his stocking report!

Much appreciation for Mr Ingram keeping me and everyone up to date!!! ;)

I was finally back up last Saturday and my beginner folks managed a handful between them in the murky water! I’ll see if I can get to a “Latest” report soon! 👀

Fish were stocked today on the lower Little Missouri River. Riverside, River Ridge and Hinds Bluff received 825 each, Old Factor Site received 625, and Low Water Bridge received 425. All seem to be in the 12 to 14 inch size, normal stockers. Thank you Melissa at the Spring River hatchery. 🤗🤗. Should be some really good fishing for the next couple of weeks!!  They were stocked on low water. For some reason the Corp didn’t stick to the schedule, imagine that!!🤣🤣. They did not generate this morning as planed. The schedule shows generation from 6 to 8 tonight, we’ll see??  Also supposed to generate tomorrow from 7 to 11.  That should scatter the fresh fish a little.

Hen's Nest Reports! / Re: 7 January 2023. “Happy New Year”

Thanks Hen for the report.  I was up there on Thursday the 5th with my brother and his grandson.  We fished Hinds Bluff.  We caught fish but they certainly weren’t terribly active.  When I crossed the River and went down stream my brother was approached by a representative of AGFC asking questions normally associated with creel surveys.  The person stated that we three were the only fisherman on the river that morning.  We got there a 0700 and left 1040, so we weren’t there long.  Between the three of us we caught around 30 fish…all released healthy.  Changing flies always produced fish right off the bat then the bite would slow down.  The fish at the release site were holding in the center big pool.  Got no hits at head or tail of main hole.  Action down stream around the bend was pretty constant compared to the main hole at access.  Size ranged from very small to really decent size chunks.

Hen's Nest Reports! / 7 January 2023. “Happy New Year”

My first report of the new year is to let you know they didn’t stock last week on the lower Little Missouri River, but they did stock 500 fish at Albert Pike last week. That is what I was told, I haven’t been up there myself. I have a really good feeling that they will stock here the first of next week, but will wait until I see it myself to report same!! The water quality here is still really bad because of the lake turn over. The water temperature is steady at 46 all up and down the river, that’s great. I was told that I was wrong, that they did stock twice on the river in December, once on the 6th and again on the 15th. Read my December 16th post, I was having trouble deciding what they did. I missed reporting the 15th  stocking because I couldn’t tell they had stocked, my bad, I’m sorry!!  Being so close together I thought we were just catching the same fish from the 6th stocking. I’ll try to do better🫤🫤🫤. I am sure they haven’t stocked again since the 15th, making it almost a month IF they stock on the 9th.  Guess we need to be thankful for what fish we do get.

There are still a lot of people fishing the river and most are finding pockets of scattered fish. I look for the fishing pressure to begin picking up, it’s that time of the year.  We have generation every morning next week except Thursday, but only for a few hours each morning and a couple of afternoons on Monday and Saturday. That should spread out the fish that I think we will get Monday. The scheduled generation will make for some fun “falling water” fishing late morning. Maybe the Spring River hatchery will send us some lunkers, but most likely an average 12 inch fish. Remember, if you always take out one more piece of trash than you bring in, we will never have a dirty river. Tight lines!!🎣🎣🎣
