4 August 2022. “The Hexagenia hatch”
« on: August 04, 2022, 05:51:23 PM »
What a day on the Lil’ Mo’. About 7:30am the hatch started and lasted until almost 9:00am. Had to send a picture to Jeff (the expert) to identify the May fly. They were Hexagenia May flies. Hex for short Jeff sez. It was one of the biggest hatches I have ever seen on this river, hundreds of them, and they are huge!! I have never seen that fly on this river before.  I tried to attach a picture of them, but lost my whole post. (Having to retype it now 🤬). The fish went crazy and gorged themselves on them. I didn’t have anything that big or color with me to match the hatch, but ended up using my version of Jeff’s March brown R & A, (you can buy the real thing from him on this site). Tried to attach a picture of that fly too but couldn’t!!  It worked really well, caught quite a few fish, but mostly just enjoy the show. They started generating on schedule today, as they have for the past couple of months. Water temp. Was back to 60 degrees. No breeze, no ripple but today the fish didn’t care, the hatch had their total attention 😁😁

Thanks for your report, Mike.  I have never been around for a serious hatch and a fish feeding frenzy.  Maybe if I fish long enough, I might get lucky.  Also we have a fly we call Mike's biscuit, an orange head micro jig with a yellow "biscuit colored" fiber tied similar to an egg or Y2K pattern.  Is that the same thing you call Oregon Cheese?  Is it possible to get a picture of the hex mayfly that you were seeing on Jeff's message board?
